Edward de Bono wrote many of his books on Lateral Thinking at Cranmer. This workshop returns the methods to the place where much of the work was developed: a quiet Georgian house in North Norfolk, with space to think, walk, write, draw, and test ideas away from familiar routines. North Norfolk, on the east coast of England, is famous for its expansive skyline. Cranmer is a three-hour drive from London, or a 90-minute train journey.

Your tutor - Caspar de Bono

Caspar de Bono is Edward de Bono’s eldest son and grew up with Lateral Thinking as part of everyday conversation at Cranmer. Edward de Bono originated the term “Lateral Thinking” and wrote more than 60 books on thinking as a skill.

Caspar studied psychology at Oxford University and fine art at Heatherleys. He teaches Lateral Thinking and uses the methods in his own work. He will help you to apply the methods in a practical, structured way. The aim is not simply to learn the theory, but to use the methods on something that matters to you.

Apply Lateral Thinking to your own creative practice

Developed by Edward de Bono, Lateral Thinking challenges established patterns of thought and opens up new possibilities. It is a skill that can be learned and applied.

The mornings will introduce the methods, the afternoons will give you time and space to apply these methods to your own creative work.

What you will learn:

  • How to direct your creative attention and constructively challenge

  • How to use the techniques of Provocation (PO) and Movement as an alternative to judgement

  • How to develop concepts and use them to breed more ideas

Open to any creative practice

  • Cranmer Studio may offer promotional discounts, referral incentives or other special offers from time to time.

  • Only one discount or promotional offer may be applied per person per course booking. Discounts cannot be combined or accumulated.

  • Unless otherwise stated, promotional discounts are deducted from the final balance rather than the initial deposit.

  • We reserve the right to amend or withdraw promotional offers for future bookings. Discounts already confirmed will be honoured, subject to the conditions of the relevant offer.

  • Bookings may be made together or separately. If booking separately, please provide the name of the person you are attending with.

  • The standard 20% deposit is calculated on the full course fee before any discount. The Bring a Friend discount is deducted from the final balance, not from the deposit.

  • Both guests must have confirmed bookings and attend the same course. If either guest cancels, the remaining guest will no longer qualify for the discount.

  • If either guest cancels, Cranmer Studio reserves the right to take account of any promotional discount already granted when calculating the reasonable cancellation costs arising from that booking. Any cancellation charge will reflect our reasonable net loss.

  • The offer cannot be combined with any other discount, promotional code or special offer. Gift vouchers may be used as a method of payment alongside the offer.

  • The offer has no cash alternative and cannot be applied retrospectively unless agreed by Cranmer Studio.

  • Our standard booking, payment and cancellation conditions apply separately to each guest.

  • We may amend or withdraw this offer for future bookings. Discounts already confirmed will be honoured, subject to the conditions of the offer.

  • Gift vouchers redeemed towards course bookings are also subject to our separate Gift Voucher Terms & Conditions

  • Nothing in these conditions excludes or limits any statutory consumer rights or liabilities that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.

Who this workshop is for

IMG_0103_edited.jpg

This workshop is for anyone seeking new ideas and new perspectives. You might be an artist, writer, musician, designer or someone facing a situation that needs a different kind of thinking.

You will get most from the workshop if you arrive with a real topic, project or issue you would like to explore and develop. If you wish to bring any creative materials with you, or you have a specific setup required, then please say so in the requirements field on the booking form.

We encourage a mix of people from different disciplines, with different interests, as one of the Lateral Thinking techniques that we will use is seeking new concepts in seemingly unrelated fields and then using that as a stepping stone to new possibilities.
