Why join this workshop

For painters with some experience who want to deepen their observational skills and develop greater independence in their work.

This three-day workshop offers an opportunity to explore the relationship between observation, perception and painting through an extended study of flowers.

Expert tuition and individual feedback

Location

Avenue of Trees leading to Cranmer Hall

The workshop will be hosted at Cranmer Studio. Our location is far enough away to break with the familiarity of the status quo and encourage reflection. North Norfolk, on the east coast of England, is famous for its expansive skyline. Cranmer is a three-hour drive from London, or a 90-minute train journey. We can provide transport to and from the train station for resident guests.

Your tutor - Kate Hopkins

Kate Hopkins is a painter, with still-life at the heart of her practice.

Always working from direct observation, she has a particular interest in visual perception, which underpins her teaching.

She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1985-1991, and currently teaches at Heatherleys and the Slade.

She is represented by Browse and Darby.

Developing your individual practice

You will develop your composition using flowers gathered from the Cranmer Hall garden, and observe the subtle relationships between colour, form and space.

With individual guidance and feedback, you will have the freedom to work on a sustained painting or a related series of studies, developing greater confidence in your artistic decisions.

The workshop begins with a talk and practical demonstration by Kate, introducing the fascinating ways in which perception influences how we see and paint.

What you will explore

  • The relative nature of colour.

  • Making independent decisions.

  • Sustaining and refining a painting over several sessions.

  • The standard 20% deposit is calculated on the full course fee before any discount. The Bring a Friend discount is deducted from the final balance, not from the deposit.

  • Both guests must have confirmed bookings and attend the same course. If either guest cancels, the remaining guest will no longer qualify for the discount.

  • If either guest cancels, Cranmer Studio reserves the right to take account of any promotional discount already granted when calculating the reasonable cancellation costs arising from that booking. Any cancellation charge will reflect our reasonable net loss.

  • The offer has no cash alternative and cannot be applied retrospectively unless agreed by Cranmer Studio.

  • Our standard booking, payment and cancellation conditions apply separately to each guest.
