The Foxgloves Beyond the Hedge

Painting the garden at Cranmer

Staying at Cranmer Studio this summer Fleur discovered North Norfolk for the first time. It resulted in a cascade of new work. As a keen gardener Fleur often incorporates flora into her landscapes, as well as embracing ‘the garden’ as subject matter. We asked Fleur to share her paintings of the garden at Cranmer.

Oil painter Fleur Grabow is from a small village in the Cotswolds. She paints with light and joyful colour to celebrate the natural world. Walking in the landscape every day, she is fascinated by the way it bears the footprint of previous generations; in the ancient pathways, churches, historic gardens and trees & hedgerows.

“Cranmer is so quiet and peaceful. I rose early and was greeted with wonderful wildlife and stunning early morning light on the borders of the charming garden. The surrounding countryside with its old trees, medieval churches and flint cottages; what a joy!”

Many of the paintings have the warm light of the recent glorious summer together with the usual gestural brushstrokes and broken colour of Fleur’s work.
