Location
We will meet at Cranmer on the first day. The workshop will be hosted at a range of locations depending on conditions: The pine forests overlooking Holkham beach, North Creake Abbey as well as the gardens and studio at Cranmer. Refreshments and toilets are available at each location. We can provide transport to and from the train station and painting locations in Norfolk for resident guests.

Your tutor - Sarah Jane Moon
Our course tutor, Sarah Jane Moon, is a painter known for bold, expressive work across portraiture and the natural environment. Her work is held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Soho House and the James Wallace Trust. She has exhibited widely and is Chair of Contemporary British Portrait Painters.
Many of Sarah Jane's students appreciate her thoughtfulness and clarity as a teacher and mentor. Sarah Jane encourages discussions on the practice of being an artist and is generous in sharing her experience.
Paint expansive skies, cool green pine forests, boundless coastline and a ruined abbey.
Our theme is nature, light and colour. We will paint from direct observation with the aim of capturing the spirit of being in the natural environment. We will develop a sense of the atmosphere of natural light, colour and the movement of living things.
Sarah Jane will explain the process we will follow - making drawings and oil sketches as well as taking photographs on location. Then working from these and other references, for example wildlife images, in the studio. There will be a mix of direct observation and studio work.
All levels of experience are welcome.

Non Residential

Residential
three day course
breakfast, lunch and supper. Starting with supper on the 30th and ending with breakfast on the 3rd
four nights accommodation, towels and linen are provided
£1,120 per person for sole occupancy of a room
Booking conditions
There are 3 resident and 4 non resident places - we will inform you when you register if onsite rooms are available
Bookings are provisional until confirmed by email
A 20% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your place
The balance is due 30 days before the workshop start date
Payment must be made by bank transfer. Instructions will be provided upon confirmation
Non residents are welcome to pay a £35 supplement to join for supper
We do not charge VAT
Cancellations and Refunds
Cancel more than 30 days before the workshop: refund of payments (we retain the deposit).
Cancel 30 days or fewer before the workshop: no refunds.
You may request to transfer your booking to another person or a future workshop up to 7 days before the start date (subject to availability and approval).
No-shows: the full fee is retained.
If we cancel the workshop: you will receive a full refund including the deposit, but we are not liable for your travel or third party accommodation costs.
Your Responsibilities

Cranmer Studio does not sell alcohol. Guests are welcome to bring a small amount of wine or beer to enjoy with dinner if they wish.
Ensure you are physically able to participate
Travel insurance is recommended
Please ask permission from other participants before you include them in your photographs or videos.

Parking is available. If required we will transport resident artists to and from the landscape locations
This is an 18th-century property so please be aware of uneven surfaces
No dogs, please
The two courses led by Sarah Jane Moon run consecutively. 30 Jul - 3 Aug, 4 - 9 Aug. We offer a 10% discount if you book both courses.

Materials

oil paints: titanium white, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue
stretched canvas or canvas board
brushes, palette knife, palette, dippers, rags
low odour solvent (no turps or white spirit)
landscape or box easel
shopping trolley (or equivalent) to carry your equipment
sun hat and protection
camping stool
We will have a limited supply of materials for sale. You may arrange for delivery of your materials in advance of your stay. We will provide transport to and from the coast for resident artists.
Accommodation
Three king size bedrooms located on the first floor of the wing of Cranmer Hall. One ensuite bedroom and two further bedrooms that share a second bathroom.
Cranmer Hall is an 18th-century listed building with uneven thresholds, and staircases. All bedrooms in the main house are on the first floor. Ground-level accommodation may be available nearby by arrangement, and transport can be provided. Please describe any access requirements when you register and we will be glad to explore what arrangements may be possible.
