Your tutor - Sarah Jane Moon

Sarah Jane Moon is a New Zealand born British painter who specialises in portraiture and figurative painting. Her work explores identity, gender and connection to place. Working at scale, her paintings are suffused with bold gestural use of colour and dynamic surface.

Her work is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Soho House and the James Wallace Trust. She has exhibited widely, including with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, New English Art Club and the New Zealand Portrait Gallery. Her work has consistently been recognised for its ambition and singularity.

Sarah Jane is Chair of the Contemporary British Portrait Painters.

Explore alternative and imaginative ways of representing ourselves.

This course invites you to rethink the self-portrait, moving beyond likeness to explore imaginative ways of representing the self through narrative, symbolism, gesture and disguise. Using painting and drawing, you’ll investigate how identity is seen, constructed and performed. Through guided exercises, discussion and experimentation, we will question portrait conventions and create work that is personal and inventive.

You will learn:

  • How to visualise identity beyond likeness

  • Use narrative, symbolism, gesture and even disguise

  • Ways to direct experiments into resolved work

All levels of experience are welcome.
